Whoever was having this arguement with you needs to look up the definition of altruism.

From dictionary.com: altruism-the principle or practice of unselfish concern for or devotion to the welfare of others

From that, I seem to be solidifying the arguement of the Negative Nancy you were talking to, but if you take it a step further and look up unselfish you find: unselfish-not selfish; disinterested; GENEROUS; altruistic.

Basically, you can reword the definition of altruism to say "the principle or practice of generous concern for or devotion to the welfare of others."

In which case I would tell you that you are the most altruistic person I have ever known on a personal level.

So, the next time you are talking to that Negative Nancy of yours, shove this in his face (in a nice way), then give him a hug 'cause he'll probably feel bad for being proved wrong.
